Visit Newfoundland, Canada's newest edition (a Canadian province since 1949) and home to a people who are individual and full of life. See original Viking settlements 1000 years old, deep ocean fjords, remote lighthouses and picturesque fishing villages on this timeless island.

    TOUR FEATURES

    DAY 01
Arrive in St. John's and pick up your rental vehicle. Today you will visit the Signal Hill National Historic Site (included), so named because the arrival of ships was announced from there to the town below through a series of flag signals. It is also at Signal Hill that on Dec. 12, 1901, Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless radio signal. Overnight in St. John's.

    DAY 02
Sightseeing and exploration in St. John's, among North America's oldest cities. This quaint seaside town is reminiscent of Europe; take a walking tour of the historic buildings. Take in Cape Spear National Historic Site (included), the most easterly point in North America. Overnight in St. John's.

    DAY 03
Drive to Clarenville, with a side trip to Trinity and Bonavista Bay - both picturesque reminders of bygone days, with fishing villages and views of the sea. Visit the settlement of Heart's Content and the Cable Station National Historic Site, western terminal of the trans-Atlantic telegraph cable laid in 1866, the first telecommunications link between Europe and North America. North of Clarenville, stop at the Ryan Premises National Historic Site (included). Opened in 1997, east coast history comes alive at this reconstructed fishing settlement. Overnight in Clarenville.

    DAY 04
Drive on to Grand Falls, with a stop in Terra Nova National Park (admission included), which encompasses bold rocky headlands and forested upland, great for birdwatching, fishing, and hiking. Overnight in Grand Falls.

    DAY 05
Gros Morne National Park beckons! The park (admission included) encompasses some of the world's most striking scenery. The Long Range mountains meet the sea in spectacular headlands that tower thousands of feet above the ocean; deep fjords cut into the rugged shoreline. Declared a World Heritage Site because of the area's unique geology. Hiking is an excellent way to appreciate the park. Overnight in Rocky Harbour.

    DAY 06
A full day to experience Gros Morne National Park and the community of Rocky Harbour, where you can choose from two boat cruises on Western Brook Pond (not included) (see cliffs more than 600 metres above the water) or Bonne Bay, a steep-walled fjord. Overnight in Rocky Harbour.

    DAY 07
Continue your adventure on the Viking Trail to the northern tip of Newfoundland. En route you'll pass Port aux Choix National Historic Site (included), where a settlement of "red paint people" dates from at least 2000 years ago. Overnight in St. Anthony.

    DAY 08
At the very tip of Newfoundland is L'Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site (admission included), a Viking settlement established by Norse fishermen more than 1000 years ago - the oldest known European settlement in North America and another World Heritage Site. Overnight in St. Anthony.

    DAY 09
Take the ferry (ferry fare for car and passengers included) to Blanc-Sablon, Qu‚bec. Further along visit Red Bay National Historic Site (admission included), where a Basque whaling station thrived throughout the 1500s. The World Whaling Capital Museum displays fascinating artifacts. A scenic drive north takes you to L'Anse au Claire, Newfoundland. Overnight in L'Anse au Claire.
